This 5K is an annual event that is hosted by the Western Pennsylvania Trial Lawyers Association to help benefit the Steelwheelers. This is a family friendly event that typically takes place in the fall at North Park in Allegheny County. This year’s annual fundraiser will be a live event, and raises funds for the Steelwheelers.
The Pittsburgh Steelwheelers are an independent, non-profit organization dedicated to providing opportunities for persons with disabilities to participate in sports. Currently, the Steelwheelers have 3 main sports that people can get involved in: Wheelchair Rugby, Wheelchair Basketball and Handcycling.
This event is a great way for people to come out and learn a little bit about the Steelwheelers and to see the kind of equipment that is used in the various adaptive sports, as well as to just get some exercise! It is also a great opportunity for anyone interested in participating in adaptive sports, as this is a rare occasion that you’ll be sure to find representatives from each sport in attendance!
The 5K is split up into 3 categories: Run, Walk and Wheel (which is broken down further into the wheelchair and handcycle groups), and prizes are given out for the top 3 finishers in each category. There are also raffle and door prizes that are given out after the race, and refreshments are also provided. Please check the News and Media page for info on the upcoming 5K and how to sign up!
If you can’t physically attend the event, please consider becoming a sponsor, or purchasing online 50/50 tickets at www.wptla.org/community-service/
